Film première of “Sun and Concrete” at the Gropius Passagen

Keyfacts
  • Comedian and podcast star celebrates film première
  • Atrium becomes a celebrity catwalk
  • Large banner over main entrance for the first time

A long-awaited and highly publicised film screening took place on 23 February 2023 at the Gropius Passagen in Berlin’s Neukölln district as “Sun and Concrete”, based on Felix Lobrecht’s bestselling novel of the same name, celebrated its official film première at UCI Luxe. Three days earlier, also at the Gropius Passagen cinema, Constantin Film had screened the film’s world première as part of the Berlin International Film Festival under the slogan “Berlinale goes Kiez” (in a reference to the city’s residential districts and their particular communities). Popular comedian and podcaster Felix Lobrecht, who himself grew up in Gropiusstadt and wrote the script together with David Wnendt, was present at both premières and drew large crowds.

Hollywood flair in Gropiusstadt

The official première on 23 February was heralded by a huge bridge banner and, for the first time, a banner placed prominently at the main entrance to the Gropius Passagen to make sure that everyone in Neukölln knew in advance what awaited them. On the night, two photo walls were positioned in the middle of the mall’s impressive atrium, enabling guests at the première to pose and have their pictures taken – just like the stars of the film on the red carpet. The Gropius Passagen carpet that had been rolled out in the atrium and guided those involved in the film towards the screening was in fact colour-coordinated with the “Sun and Concrete” film poster and proved to be a real eye-catcher in bright orange.

As a little taster before the screening, guests in the auditorium were treated to a laser show – by now something of a rarity in movie theatres. In fact, some of the 850 invited guests must have felt like they’d been zoomed right back to their childhood days – a fitting introduction to the film, as “Sun and Concrete” is set in the summer of 2003. The special event at the Gropius Passagen attracted not just press attention but also hordes of fans and onlookers. The team on site was prepared for the rush and supported the happenings with a well-rehearsed safety and security system to ensure the event went smoothly.

Première backdrop of choice

Felix Lobrecht’s fan-base had been awaiting the film première eagerly for some time, aided by his own life-hack comedy podcast series entitled “Gemischtes Hack” which had kept his 1.1 million listeners regularly up to speed with all key news on filming and the première. Everyone was delighted when the Gropius Passagen were chosen as the location for the première, as “Sun and Concrete” is largely set in Gropiusstadt and some scenes were even filmed in the mall itself, where Felix Lobrecht spent a lot of time in his youth. So, there could hardly have been a more authentic venue for the initial screening! This view was also shared by the audience and the film team, who were delighted with the successful event.
